VL Commodore Fusebox Relocation Kit Installation Guide

This guide shows you how to remove the factory VL fusebox from the engine bay and install the fusebox relocation kit inside the glovebox area.

Take your time with this job. Do not rush it.

The factory wiring harness does fit through the firewall hole. It may feel tight, but that is how Holden installed it from factory.

Important: Do not pull hard on the wires. Work slowly and carefully so you do not damage the harness.

Tools You May Need

  • Small flat blade screwdriver
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Socket set
  • Marker pen or labels
  • Masking tape
  • Sharp blade
  • Drill
  • 6 mm drill bit
  • Electrical tape or harness tape
  • Phone camera

Part 1: Removing the Factory Fusebox

Step 1: Disconnect the Battery

Before touching the fusebox, disconnect the battery.

This stops anything from shorting out while you are working.

Step 2: Remove the Blower Fan

Remove the blower fan from the passenger side of the engine bay.

This gives you room to access the factory fusebox wiring and pull the harness back through the firewall.

Remove the screws holding the blower fan in place, then carefully move the blower fan out of the way.

Keep the screws somewhere safe because they will be reused later.

Once the blower fan is removed, you will be able to access the firewall grommet and the fusebox harness more easily.

Step 3: Number the Relays

Mark each relay housing and the matching relay with a number.

For example:

  • Relay 1 goes back into housing 1
  • Relay 2 goes back into housing 2
  • Relay 3 goes back into housing 3

Not all relays are the same, so this makes it easy to put everything back in the correct spot later.

Step 4: Record the Fuse Locations

Take a clear photo of the fusebox before removing the fuses.

You can also write down where each fuse goes.

This is important because the fuses need to go back into the correct positions.

Step 5: Remove the Relays and Fuses

Once everything is marked and photographed, remove all the relays and fuses.

Put them somewhere safe so they do not get lost.

Step 6: Unclip the Relay Housings

Use a small flat blade screwdriver to carefully unclip the relay housings from the main fusebox assembly.

Take your time. Do not force them.

Step 7: Remove the Fuse Panel

Unscrew the fuse panel from the factory fusebox housing.

Keep the factory screws because they will be reused later.

Step 8: Remove the Factory Fusebox Housing

Once the relay housings and fuse panel are loose, unbolt the factory fusebox housing from the engine bay.

You should now be left with the wiring harness only.

Step 9: Push the Firewall Grommet Into the Car

Push the factory firewall grommet back through the firewall and into the inside of the car.

This allows the harness to be pulled through from the passenger side.

Step 10: Pull the Harness Into the Car

Carefully pull the harness through the firewall and into the passenger side of the car.

Go slowly.

Do not damage, stretch, cut, or pull hard on any wires.

The harness will fit through the firewall hole. It may take some time, but it does fit.

Step 11: Remove or Tuck Away the Firewall Grommet

Once the harness is inside the car, you have two options.

Option 1: Cut the Grommet Off

You can carefully cut the grommet off the harness using a sharp blade.

Before cutting, remove the plastic clip that goes around the grommet.

Be very careful not to cut or damage any wiring.

Option 2: Leave the Grommet on the Harness

If you do not want to cut the grommet off, you can leave it on the harness.

It can sit up high in the gap when the blower fan is reinstalled.

Step 12: Reinstall the Blower Fan and Engine Bay Panel

Reinstall the blower fan, screws, and the engine bay panel.

At this point, the factory fusebox should be removed from the engine bay and the harness should now be sitting on the passenger side floor inside the car.

You are now ready to install the fusebox relocation kit.

Part 2: Installing the Fusebox Relocation Kit

Step 1: Remove Tape From the Harness

Remove some of the old tape from the harness.

This makes it easier to move the relay housings around and position everything neatly on the relocation panel.

Do not cut into the wires.

Step 2: Remove the Glovebox

If the glovebox has not already been removed, remove it now.

This gives you room to fit the relocation kit.

Step 3: Mark and Cut the Back of the Glovebox

Mark the back of the glovebox where the harness needs to pass through.

Start with the basic shape shown in the photo.

You may need to make the hole bigger after test fitting.

Every car is slightly different, so test fit the glovebox and trim more if needed.

The harness should move freely and should not be crushed or pulled tight.

Step 4: Install the Fuse Panel Into the Relocation Kit

The fuse panel installs from underneath the relocation kit, as shown in the photo.

Use the factory screws to secure it into place.

Step 5: Reinstall the Relays Into Their Numbered Housings

Reinstall each relay into the relay housing you numbered earlier.

Make sure each relay goes back into the correct housing.

Step 6: Install the Relay Housings Into the Relocation Kit

Some relay housings are longer than others.

Split the relay housings left to right, depending on how the harness naturally wants to sit.

The longer relay housings should be fitted furthest away from the harness.

To install each relay housing:

  1. Hold the relay housing underneath the relocation panel.
  2. Rotate it 90 degrees.
  3. Slide it up through the hole in the panel.
  4. Rotate it back 90 degrees.
  5. Push it down until it clips into place.

Repeat this for all relay housings.

Step 7: Check Everything Is Sitting Correctly

At this stage, the fuse panel and all relay housings should be mounted to the relocation kit.

Check that:

  • All relay housings are clipped in properly
  • The fuse panel is screwed down
  • The harness is not twisted
  • No wires are being stretched
  • No wires are being pinched

Step 8: Tape the Harness Neatly

Once everything is sitting correctly, tape the harness neatly.

Do not tape it too tight.

The goal is to keep the harness clean and tidy while still letting it sit naturally.

Step 9: Mount the Relocation Kit Into the Glovebox

Place the relocation kit into position inside the glovebox.

Mark the mounting holes.

Drill the holes using a 6 mm drill bit.

Bolt the relocation kit into place.

Step 10: Reinstall the Glovebox

Reinstall the glovebox back into its original position.

Make sure the harness is not pinched behind it.

Step 11: Final Check

Before reconnecting the battery, check everything again.

Make sure:

  • All relays are installed
  • All fuses are installed
  • The fuse panel is secure
  • The relay housings are clipped in
  • The harness is not rubbing on sharp edges
  • The harness is not pinched
  • The glovebox opens and closes properly

Once everything is checked, reconnect the battery and test the vehicle.
