This pressure sensor reference guide explains how to choose and wire pressure sensors for motorsport wiring, aftermarket ECU installations, EFI conversions, data logging, PDM systems and custom automotive electrical builds.
Pressure sensors are commonly used for oil pressure, fuel pressure, boost pressure, coolant pressure, brake pressure, nitrous pressure and transmission pressure. Most modern motorsport pressure sensors are 3-wire sensors using 5 volt sensor supply, sensor ground and a signal wire back to the ECU or dash logger.
Most aftermarket ECU pressure sensors use three wires: 5V sensor supply, sensor ground and 0.5–4.5V signal. Choose the pressure range to suit the job, wire the sensor to the ECU sensor supply and sensor ground, then calibrate the input in the ECU software using the sensor data sheet.

Most motorsport pressure sensors are wired with three wires. Always confirm the exact pinout from the sensor data sheet before powering the sensor.

Many aftermarket pressure sensors use a 0.5–4.5 volt signal range. This means the sensor does not normally output 0 volts at zero pressure or 5 volts at full scale. The ECU needs to be calibrated correctly so it knows what pressure equals what voltage.
For example, a 0–150 psi pressure sensor may be calibrated as 0.5V = 0 psi and 4.5V = 150 psi. A 0–100 psi sensor may use the same voltage range, but the pressure scale is different.
Choose a sensor range that suits the actual pressure you expect to measure. A sensor that is too small can max out. A sensor that is too large may give poor resolution in the pressure range you actually care about.

Oil pressure sensors are commonly wired to an aftermarket ECU or dash logger so the vehicle can display oil pressure, log pressure data and trigger engine protection if pressure drops below a safe level.
Fuel pressure sensors are useful for fuel system monitoring, ECU protection, fuel pressure compensation and data logging. On boosted engines, fuel pressure is often monitored against manifold pressure so the ECU can detect fuel system problems.
Brake pressure sensors are commonly used in motorsport for data logging, traction control strategies, driver analysis and dash display. They usually need a much higher pressure range than oil or fuel pressure sensors.
Sensor ground is important. A pressure sensor signal is measured against its ground reference. If the sensor ground is noisy, shared with high-current loads or connected incorrectly, the pressure reading can become unstable or inaccurate.
For most aftermarket ECU installs, pressure sensors should be wired to the ECU sensor ground, not chassis ground. Keep sensor wiring away from ignition coils, alternator wiring, starter cables and other noisy high-current wiring where practical.
Pressure sensor wiring is normally low-current signal wiring. In many harnesses, 22 AWG or 20 AWG Tefzel wire is commonly used for sensor supply, sensor ground and signal wiring. For most pressure sensors, shielding is not usually required, but clean routing and correct grounding are still important.
After wiring the sensor, the ECU needs the correct calibration. This tells the ECU what pressure value matches the sensor voltage.
Do not assume all 3-wire pressure sensors use the same calibration. Two sensors can look similar but use different pressure ranges or voltage scaling.

Only wire a pressure sensor to 12V if the sensor data sheet specifically says it is a 12V sensor. Many common motorsport pressure sensors are 5V sensors and can be damaged if connected to 12V.
It means the sensor signal usually starts around 0.5 volts at zero pressure and rises to around 4.5 volts at full-scale pressure. The ECU must be calibrated to match the sensor range.
