Motorsport and Aftermarket ECU Sensors

12Volt Motorsports supplies sensors and sensor-related wiring products for motorsport wiring, aftermarket ECU installations, performance vehicles, engine bay looms and custom harness builds.

Sensors are a critical part of any ECU or data system. The correct sensor, pressure range, thread, connector, wiring, calibration and ECU setup all need to match the application.

We are based in Altona Meadows, Melbourne and ship motorsport sensors Australia-wide.

Common Motorsport Sensor Applications

Aftermarket ECU and motorsport wiring systems commonly use sensors to monitor pressure, temperature, ethanol content, boost, engine position, vehicle speed and other critical data channels.

Sensor Type Common Use
Oil pressure sensor Engine oil pressure monitoring, ECU protection strategies, dash display and data logging
Fuel pressure sensor Fuel system monitoring, fuel pressure compensation, safety strategies and diagnostics
Coolant temperature sensor Engine temperature monitoring, fan control, warm-up enrichment and protection strategies
Air temperature sensor Intake air temperature correction, charge temperature monitoring and tuning data
Boost pressure sensor Turbo boost monitoring, boost control, engine protection and data logging
Flex fuel / ethanol content sensor Ethanol content measurement for flex fuel tuning, ignition correction and fuel correction strategies
Wheel speed or vehicle speed sensor Vehicle speed, traction control, launch control, shift strategies and data logging

Choosing the Right Sensor

The correct sensor depends on what you are measuring, the pressure or temperature range, the thread type, connector style, wiring requirements, ECU input type and calibration data.

For pressure sensors, choose a range that suits the job. For example, oil pressure, fuel pressure, brake pressure and boost pressure may all require different sensor ranges. Choosing a sensor with the wrong range can reduce accuracy or make the ECU data less useful.

Sensor Wiring for Aftermarket ECUs

Sensor wiring should be planned properly. Many sensors require a 5V reference, sensor ground and signal wire. Some sensors require pull-ups, shielded cable, twisted pair wiring or specific ECU input configuration.

Noise-sensitive signals such as crank, cam, knock, wheel speed and some digital sensors may need shielded cable or specific routing away from ignition, alternator and high-current wiring. Always follow the ECU manufacturer’s wiring and setup requirements.

Sensors as Part of a Complete Wiring System

Sensors are normally part of a complete motorsport wiring system. They should be selected and wired together with the ECU, PDM, dash, CAN devices, power distribution, grounding layout, Tefzel wire, Raychem DR25, connectors, labels and documentation.

A good sensor installation is not only about the sensor itself. Connector choice, wire size, shielding, calibration, pull-up requirements, sensor ground strategy and ECU setup all affect the final result.
