Built In House: Alternator Control Modules

Our alternator modules are designed and built by 12Volt Motorsports to solve a problem every LS swap and race build hits: modern alternators will not charge without the factory ECU's control signal. The Standalone LS PWM Alternator Control Module drives PWM controlled LS alternators on standalone ECU builds, and the Alternator Excite Module provides a clean excite signal for alternators that need one. You will not find these on a competitor's shelf.

CAN Systems, Wired Properly

Keypads, dashes and PDMs all talk over CAN, which means one twisted pair instead of a loom full of relay wiring. We run CAN in M27500 shielded Tefzel where routing demands it, power circuits in M22759/32 Tefzel, sleeved in Raychem DR25. The common failures in poor installations are voltage drop, weak grounds, noisy sensor signals, incorrect CAN termination and overloaded circuits, all avoidable with proper design. What does a CAN keypad do?

A CAN keypad replaces a panel of switches and their relay wiring with one keypad on a two wire CAN bus. The ECU or PDM switches the loads, the keypad just sends the commands, which massively simplifies dash wiring.

What is a PDM?

A power distribution module. It replaces relays and fuses with software controlled, current monitored electronic outputs, giving programmable circuit protection, logic control and diagnostics. See the Haltech PD16 in our power distribution range.

Why does CAN wiring matter?

CAN is how the ECU, PDM, dash, keypads and sensors communicate. Poor CAN wiring, wrong termination or bad routing causes communication faults, unreliable data and problems that are miserable to diagnose. Twisted pair, correct termination at both ends and sensible routing solve it.

Why does my LS swap alternator not charge?

Late model LS alternators are PWM controlled by the factory ECU. Fit a standalone ECU and the alternator never gets its control signal, so it will not charge properly. Our Standalone LS PWM Alternator Control Module solves exactly this, built and tested in house.

What is an alternator excite module for?

Many alternators need an ignition switched excite signal before they start charging. On race cars without factory wiring, our excite module provides that signal cleanly, without hacking together warning lamp circuits.

Do I need a battery isolator for motorsport?

Most Australian motorsport categories require a battery isolator that kills the engine and cuts battery power, reachable by the driver and externally. The FIA 6 pole kit covers alternator and kill circuits, and the Cartek unit does it solid state. Check your category rulebook for the exact requirement.
