Haltech needs no introduction in this country. The range runs from the budget Elite 550 right up to the Nexus R5, which is frankly showing off: a full power distribution module, dual wideband and 23 analog inputs in the one box, nothing else in this guide comes close. The Nexus platform (T, S and R series) adds WiFi, huge logging and the Haltech Connect app; the Elite series remains the proven, tuner friendly workhorse.

Nobody stacks more tuning features into fewer dollars than Link, and they back every box with a lifetime warranty, which says plenty about how they build them. Every G4X ECU gets 512MB of logging and the same software; the tiers buy you outputs and hardware features. The XtremeX puts e-throttle and traction control at a price the other brands charge four figures more for, and the G5 Voodoo series is the newest platform in this guide.

Walk down any drag pit lane and count the FuelTech screens. Every PowerFT ECU has a colour touchscreen that doubles as a dash, a 7 bar internal MAP sensor, and nitrous, boost and traction control baked in. The FT550 adds the GearController for clutchless power shifts plus an internal G meter, and the FT600 stretches the I/O for pro level cars.

Holley speaks fluent V8. Terminator X kits are the fastest path from carburetted or stock LS to running EFI, with self learning that tunes as you drive. The HP carries genuine race pedigree (it is the factory ECU of the COPO Camaro), and the Dominator is the I/O monster for fully customised drag and pro touring builds.

Budget 4 cylinder street or club car: Link AtomX or MonsoonX, Haltech Elite 550 or Nexus T1.
6 cylinder (RB, JZ, Barra): Haltech Nexus T2 or Nexus S3, Link StormX or FuryX.
V8 race car: Haltech Nexus S3, Link XtremeX, FuelTech FT550.

Ground up race build replacing the fuse box: Haltech Nexus R3 or R5, nothing else here has onboard power distribution. Still torn between two? That is exactly what the phone is for.
There is no universal best, there is a best fit. Haltech has the widest spread from budget to the R5 super box with onboard power distribution. Link gives the most tuning features per dollar with a lifetime warranty. FuelTech dominates drag racing with the built in touchscreen dash and gear controller. Holley owns the LS and domestic V8 world with self learning plug and play kits.
A plug in ECU connects to the factory harness in the factory location, minimal wiring, keeps stock functions. A wire in (universal) ECU needs a harness built to it, more work but total freedom, the choice for engine swaps and race builds. Haltech Nexus plug ins and the Link PlugIn range cover popular platforms; everything else here is wire in.
One of each per cylinder for full sequential operation. A 4 cylinder needs 4 and 4, an 8 needs 8 and 8, rotaries need leading and trailing per rotor. Batch fire can halve the requirement but costs tuning precision, so buy sequential capacity for your cylinder count.
A power distribution module replaces fuses and relays with solid state outputs. The Haltech Nexus R3 and R5 build it into the ECU, one box wires the whole car. If you are building a race car from scratch, it saves a fuse box, relays and kilograms of wiring.
Only if your engine uses an electronic throttle body or you plan one. Modern engine swaps, LS3, Barra, 2JZ VVTi and most 2005 plus engines, are drive by wire, so check the throttle before you pick the ECU tier.
