Dyno sheets in Australia are mostly at the wheels, manufacturer figures are at the flywheel. Pick where your number was measured and the driveline type, and the calculator estimates the other end.
Australia quotes engine output in kilowatts, the American aftermarket talks horsepower, and Japanese and European spec sheets use PS, which is metric horsepower and about 1.4 percent smaller than mechanical horsepower. One kilowatt is 1.341 hp or 1.36 PS. This converter handles all three at once, then goes a step further: pick whether your figure came from a chassis dyno or a manufacturer sheet, and it estimates the number at the other end of the driveline so you are comparing like with like.
1 kW is 1.341 mechanical horsepower, or 1.36 PS. Going the other way, 1 hp is 0.7457 kW and 1 PS is 0.7355 kW.
PS (Pferdestarke) is metric horsepower, defined as 735.5 watts. Mechanical horsepower is 745.7 watts. A 300 PS Japanese factory figure is about 296 hp. Small difference, but it matters when a spec sheet and a dyno sheet disagree.
Manufacturers quote flywheel power. A chassis dyno measures at the tyres after the gearbox, diff, driveshafts and wheels have taken their share, typically 15 percent for a manual, 20 for an automatic and 25 or more for all wheel drive. The calculator applies those losses so you can compare properly.
No, they are typical estimates. Real losses depend on the dyno type, tyre pressure, gearbox and diff design, oil temperature and how the run was done. Use the result as a sanity check, not a certified figure.
