Motorsport Heatshrink for Wiring Harnesses

12Volt Motorsports stocks genuine motorsport heatshrink in Australia, sold by the metre from Melbourne and shipped Australia wide. The range covers the complete harness protection system: Raychem DR-25 outer sleeving, Sumitomo W5DL and Raychem ATUM adhesive lined heatshrink for sealing, and Raychem System 25 moulded boots for connector exits. These are the same materials used on professional race car, drag car, off road and aerospace harnesses, and the same materials we use in our own custom harness builds.

Heatshrink Selection Guide

Four products cover every job on a motorsport harness. The shrink ratio, adhesive lining and temperature rating decide which one suits the job.

Product Shrink ratio Adhesive Operating temp Best used for
Raychem DR-252:1No-75C to 150COuter sleeving on the whole harness. The motorsport standard. Non adhesive so the loom stays flexible and repairable
Sumitomo W5DL2:1Yes-55C to 110CSealed splices, connector exits and tight branch transitions. Dual wall with a glue lining that flows into voids
Raychem ATUM4:1Yes-55C to 110CLarge transitions and connector sealing where the tubing must pass over a connector body then shrink down onto the cable
Raychem System 25 bootsMouldedUse with adhesive-75C to 150CStrain relief and sealing at connector backshells and branch splits. Straight and 90 degree shapes

Which Heatshrink Should I Use?

Run DR-25 as the outer sleeve over the whole harness. Do not use adhesive lined product for general sleeving, it makes the loom stiff and impossible to repair. Use W5DL at splices and small connector exits. Use ATUM when you need a big shrink ratio, for example shrinking over a connector shell down onto the cable behind it. Finish connector exits and branch points with moulded boots where a shaped, sealed transition is needed.

Looking for Raychem SCL?

Raychem SCL is hard to get in Australia. Sumitomo W5DL is the direct equivalent we stock: a semi rigid, dual wall, adhesive lined 2:1 heatshrink that does the same job at splices, breakouts and sealed entries. If your build sheet calls for SCL, order the matching size in W5DL.

Sizing Tip

Pick a supplied diameter that slides easily over the bundle or connector, and check the recovered diameter shrinks smaller than the cable underneath. Every product page lists both diameters. If you are between sizes, go up and let the shrink ratio do the work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I buy motorsport heatshrink in Australia?

Right here. 12Volt Motorsports stocks genuine Raychem DR-25, Raychem ATUM, Sumitomo W5DL and Raychem moulded boots in Melbourne and ships Australia wide, cut by the metre.

What heatshrink should I use for motorsport wiring?

Raychem DR-25 as the outer sleeve over the whole harness. Sumitomo W5DL at splices and small connector exits. Raychem ATUM where a 4:1 shrink ratio is needed to pass over a connector body. Moulded boots at connector backshells and branch splits.

What can I use instead of Raychem SCL?

Sumitomo W5DL. Raychem SCL is hard to get in Australia and W5DL is the direct equivalent: a semi rigid, adhesive lined 2:1 dual wall heatshrink. Same applications, same result.

What is the difference between DR-25 and adhesive lined heatshrink?

DR-25 has no adhesive. It is the flexible outer jacket for the whole loom, rated -75C to 150C and resistant to fuels, hydraulic fluid and oils. Adhesive lined products like W5DL and ATUM melt glue into the joint as they shrink, sealing out moisture and adding strain relief. Use them only at splices, transitions and connector exits.

Can I use normal hardware store heatshrink on a race harness?

Not if you want it to last. Standard polyolefin heatshrink is not rated for fuel, oil or the heat cycles in an engine bay, which is why DR-25 is the motorsport standard.

What size DR-25 do I need for my harness?

Measure the bundle diameter, then pick a size whose supplied diameter is larger than the bundle and whose recovered diameter is smaller. Sizes from 1/8 inch (3.2mm supplied) to 1 inch (25.4mm supplied) are stocked. If unsure, call 0458 102 134 with your wire count and gauge and we will size it for you.

Do you ship heatshrink Australia wide?

Yes. We ship to Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth, Canberra, Hobart, Darwin and everywhere in between, usually same or next business day.
